Sunset Over Lake Superior

September 20, 2010

This morning we woke up to clear, blue skies. This was a perfect opportunity to get some photos of Whitefish Point Lighthouse. When we were here last year, they were working on the top of the lighthouse. There was scaffolding everywhere and it was impossible to photograph the tower.

Another surprise was that they had received permission from the Coast Guard (which still has control of the tower) to open the tower to climbers. Cheryl and I made the climb, and both of us walked around the outside of the top. The photo of the beach and house was taken from the top of the tower. The house is the old Crew Quarters for the lighthouse and life saving station. We are staying in this house. Between the building and the beach is a large sand dune area. This area is used by birdwatchers in the spring to record the sightings of raptors.

The beach is covered with drift wood from recent storms. The mountains in the background are in Canada.

After lunch we headed to Tahquamenon Falls State Park. This is an impressive state park with camping, restaurants, gift shops and miles of trails. The park also has two waterfalls that are three miles apart. There is a boardwalk trail connecting the two falls. The lower falls are made up of several groups of falls which surround a fairly large island.

We seem to run into these two people just about every day. You never know where they will turn up. Parts of the lower falls are behind them.

The Upper Falls are 50 feet high and 200 feet across. When we visited the Upper Falls last year, the water level was only about 50% of what was flowing today. Note the color of the water.
Tomorrow we are headed to Marquette, MI
