Our first day out each year is usually long and a little dull and this year was no exception. Our goal was to get as far north as possible. We did stop at a couple of antique malls and the Fenton Glass Works in Williamstown, WV.
After leaving Fenton, we crossed the bridge over the Ohio River to Marietta, OH. Marietta has a paddle-wheel boat festival each September (see September 7, 2008).
This year’s attraction was the USS LST 325. The LST stands for Landing Ship Tank. The 325 was built in 1943 by the Philadelphia Navy Yard and served in WWII. She was a support ship in June 1944 for the Normandy Invasion.
Note the open front end of the ship in the photo.
We are spending the night in Newcomerstown, OH tonight.
Tomorrow we will be heading to Birch Run, MI with stops in Mansfield, OH (Richfield Carrousel Park and the Mansfield Reformatory) and Whitehouse, OH (The Butterfly House).
