September 15, 2010

This morning we turned off the interstate and headed up the east coast of Michigan where we got our first look at Lake Huron. The water was calm, clear, and beautiful.

Our first stop was a return visit to Tawas State Park and the Tawas Lighthouse. The lighthouse stands 67 feet tall and was built in 1876. It is one of four on the Great Lakes with this design. You can stay in the lighthouse as a lighthouse keeper for a week at a time. You are required to give tours on the weekend. This could be a future venture.

Iargo Springs on the Au Sable River near Oscoda was next on our list. The Au Sable River looks much like a swamp due to the numerous dams located on the river.

Legend has it that the springs were considered sacred grounds to Native Americans in the area. To reach the springs, you have to travel down and back up 323 steps. Whew!!

The springs are made up of about 10-12 individual springs, collectively discharging a very large amount of water.

Tomorrow we will be traveling to Sault Ste. Marie with a stop at Presque Isle Lighthouse.

Some days it is hard to find a good sign, and since we are traveling the same route for much of our trip, we need to look extra hard to find something to share with you. Today we were lucky. Hope you enjoy the signs we spy.
